Chapter Six

The next night, Richard and Maddy snuck out the back door of his house. Laughter and boisterous voices became fainter the deeper they walked into the garden. They stopped at a stone bench and sat side by side.

Maddy said, “You did it. You survived an Andrade Christmas.”

“Your family is not as bad as you think.”

“You can say that even after they dressed you up as Santa and had all the young cousins sit on your lap and pull your beard?”

Richard laughed and hugged Maddy to his side. “Your father is still testing me and that’s okay. He wants only the best for you.”

“What do you think your sister thinks of my family?”

“She’s still here, isn’t she? Usually she stays for an hour and goes back to her friends in town. Maybe because your male cousins are flocking around her?”

“I apologized to her for not telling her why I was on the run. I felt like an idiot, but it had to be said.”

“She doesn’t hold grudges, not even when she should.” Maddy knew instantly who he was referencing.

“I wish I knew what to say to help you with your mother. I can’t imagine not having mine in my life.”

“Birthing a child does not make a woman a mother,” Richard said coldly. “Being a mother is a choice, a decision to put the child first even if it means sacrificing for the child. You have a mother. I do not.”

Maddy decided to change the subject. She had faith that the happiness they’d found together would ease his wounds, but healing took time. “You handed out about a hundred presents today, and I just realized that you didn’t get one.”

He pulled her closer. “I have everything I need right here.” He held a twig of mistletoe above her head and kissed her on the lips. “And if you give me time to work out how, I will have everything I need in New York.”

Maddy sat straighter in his arms. “New York?”

He kissed her shocked lips lightly. “You love your family and I love you. I can cook anywhere.”

Tears began to pour down Maddy’s cheeks. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, and together we will create what I have always wanted—family recipes.”

“I love it when you talk food,” Maddy teased.

“Shut up and kiss me,” Richard growled and dangled the mistletoe above her again.

And she did.
